# "Dirty" USDT: what the term means

**Short answer.** "Dirty" USDT is not a technical state of a token: every USDT is identical. The term is informal and usually means funds linked to a blacklisted or sanctioned address or to illicit activity. What you can verify is a list match: the Tether blacklist and OFAC.

## Is there such a thing as dirty USDT?

Tokens are fungible; the blockchain only records which addresses moved them. "Dirty" describes the history of an address or transfer, and only an investigation can establish it. The checker does not label funds as dirty or clean.

## What can actually be verified?

Whether an address is on the Tether blacklist (contract `TR7NHqjeKQxGTCi8q8ZY4pL8otSzgjLj6t`) and whether it matches the OFAC lists ([OFAC FAQ 562](https://ofac.treasury.gov/faqs/562)). BlockSec counted 4,163 addresses frozen in 2025, 33.7% of them with a $0 balance at the time ([BlockSec](https://blocksec.com/blog/1-26-billion-frozen-usdt-blacklisting-on-ethereum-and-tron-in-2025)).

## What should I do before accepting funds?

Check the sender's address in the [checker](/tools/usdt-trc20-checker/), keep a record of the result and the time, and follow your own policy. If your funds got frozen, read [USDT frozen: what to do](/guides/usdt-frozen-what-to-do/).
